Since 2011, every second Sunday in November, the believers of the Russian Church of Christians of Evangelical Faith / Pentecostals have been praying for orphans together with other Christians of Russia. This year the Day of Prayer for Orphans fell on November 10.
The website of the Russia Without Orphans Alliance (https://rossiabezsirot.ru), which started the Day of Prayer for Orphans in Russia, tells about its history.
More than 20 years ago, the pastor of a small African church began praying for orphans in his community. On a certain day, people brought food and clothing, donations and gifts to the church for orphans and their foster families. In the church they talked about helping orphans and widows and lifted up prayers for God's protection for them. Prayers for orphans in this church and in the city helped make a significant difference for the orphans.
The Day of Prayer for Orphans has become a worldwide phenomenon, launching a wave of virtue and compassion in more than 140 countries around the world. The initiative has grown its peculiarities in every corner of the world, has acquired different formats and names, but the essence remains the same: care and mercy towards orphans and widows, spiritual intercession and practical help.
In Russia, the Day of Prayer for Orphans is usually associated with charity events and encouraging meetings. On the Day of Prayer for Orphans in the church community it is customary to honor foster parents and volunteers, mention examples of foster parenting and care for widows with children from the Bible. On this day, Christians in Russia reflect on the steps that they personally can and are willing to take to somehow participate in the common good. This year's slogan “Everyone can help” reflects the idea of a large number of people participating as much as possible.
